Missy's HEART: Now serving Adair, Russell, Cumberland, Metcalfe, Green, Taylor, and Casey Counties
Readers who are clients of Coffey’s Veterinary Center in Columbia, KY may recognize the name Missy’s HEART, as Dr. Janice Coffey and her team have been working on this project off and on for three years. The charity is named after Missy Grider, who served as office manager for Coffey’s Veterinary Center for 15 years. Missy was sadly taken from her family and community very suddenly due to cancer in January of 2021. It was a devastating loss, and the goal of this charity is to help honor Missy’s memory by helping local pets – a pastime she found quite rewarding.
After a lot of struggle and setback, Missy’s HEART is now a government-recognized 501c3 non-profit organization. HEART stands for Helping Every Animal Receive Treatment. The charity is run by a Board of Directors with various education and employment backgrounds – all of whom are animal lovers dedicated to helping pets in our local community.
How Will Missy's HEART Serve Our Community?
Missy's HEART's main focus is the care of pets around our community and the reduction of economic euthanasia. Our charity raises funds to pay for medical services and care to injured or sick animals that do not have owners or whose owners are in financial crisis. Missy’s HEART also provides small scholarships to local high-schoolers interested in veterinary medicine, public education media regarding pet care, and a local pet blood bank for local veterinary use. Funds for vouchers, scholarships, and various organization supplies will be obtained through public donations via fundraising. Distribution of vouchers will be based on financial need communicated through an online application. Vouchers cannot be bought or sold and payment will be provided directly to participating veterinary practices. Vouchers will be matched via serial number to a specific patient and will have a time limit for redemption of funds.
The first two-three months following this launch will be a designated fundraising period, after which the voucher applications will become available.
What is the Charity Launching?
Today is the official launch of our Missy’s HEART website, where members of our community can find information about the charity, obtain the charity’s public documents (including meeting minutes), donate, purchase keepsakes, RSVP for events, read news and public education articles, and eventually apply for vouchers and scholarships. A great deal of work has gone into the website, but please be aware that bugs or errors may be more common for the first few weeks after launch. If readers experience bugs or errors, it is encouraged that they report these errors to care@missysheart.com so that they may be fixed in a timely manner.
We are excited to begin this next chapter and begin serving our community fully! Please visit our website, www.missysheart.com and explore everything our charity has to offer! Be sure to check out our Events tab where you can RSVP for the first Missy’s HEART pet-blood donor drive, our Pets In Need tab where you can view homeless pets that need adoption, and our Public Education / News tab, where we already have several articles about pet care readers can enjoy!
